Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Patients 18 years of age or older; informed consent Clinical symptoms of community-acquired pneumonia: CAP will be defined by a new infiltrate on chest radiograph and the presence of one or several of the following acute respiratory signs or symptoms: cough; sputum production; dyspnea; core body temperature >38.0 degree C; auscultatory findings of abnormal breath sounds and rales; leukocyte count >10 or <4 x 10^9 cells/L.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: permanent inability for informed consent; active intravenous drug abuse, acute burn injury; gastrointestinal bleeding within the past three months; known adrenal insufficiency, a condition requiring more dexamethasone than 5 mg/day prednisone equivalent; pregnancy or breast feeding, and severe immunosuppression
