Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The presence of OA of the knee was diagnosed by the Clinical Criteria for the Classification of Idiopathic OA of the Knee developed by ACR. Including: (1) the patient had symptomatic OA in at least one knee for at least 6 months prior to study entry; (2) the patient had no current participation in an exercise program, and (3) the patient had shown willingness to participate in the study, and provide a signed informed consent.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The exclusion criteria included patients who had (1) symptoms of locking or instability; (2) a corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injection in the symptomatic knee within 12 months prior to study entry, and (3) a history of any of the following: knee surgery within the last 2 years, a joint replacement at any point, or a prior diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis. In addition, patients who had significant medical complications (e.g., hemiplegia, heart disease, and gout, which might affect the results of the study) were also excluded.
