18 Years to 23 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1) aged 21+5 yrs; right-handed; 2) with medical education background; 3) mild to moderate malocclusion (1-5mm crowd per dentition)and the fixed orthodontic treatment was needed; 4) fully informed of and consented with the trial; 5) with no infectious or systemic diseases; no psychological disorders; 6) with no pain-causing oral diseases such as tooth ache, periodontitis, oral ulcer, chronic pulpitis etc.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) undergone previous orthodontic treatment; 2) recently experienced a toothache (within 1 month); 3) used analgesics within 3 days before the trial; 4) displayed excessive anxiety, as measured by the Trait-Anxiety Inventory (T-AI) score (males, >=56; females, >=57) and State-Anxiety Inventory (S-AI) score (males, >=53; females, >=55); 5) with a pain threshold less than 3 s or >60 s; endurance time >5 min according to the cold pressor test (CPT).
