Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. an ICD-10 diagnosis of schizophrenia (World Health Organization. 1992); 2. an age within the range of 18 to 60 years old; 3. an illness duration no less than 2 years; 4. having a current or previous live-in caregiver who provides most of the care; 5. on maintenance treatment with one of the following 7 anti-psychotics: chlorpromazine, sulpiride, clozapine, risperidone, haloperidol, olanzapine and aripiprazole; 6. having total PANSS (positive and negative syndrome scale) scores of no more than 60, and 7. no formal training or regular practice of Tai-chi prior to enrollment.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. were pregnant or breastfeeding; 2. were diagnosed with severe physical illness; 3. had co-morbid psychiatric conditions, organic syndromes, physical disabilities, mental retardation, substance abuse or physically dependent, or 4. were participating in other therapy programs.
