Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Type 2 diabetes on the basis of a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) according to WHO(1999) criteria (FBG>=7.0mmol/L, 2hPBG>=11.1mmol/L). Peripheral neuropathy was defined by abnormalities in monofilament testing. The National Kidney Foundation recommendations using the CKD Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) Creatinine Equation (2009) to estimate GFR. For diagnosing diabetic retinopathy (DR), all participants underwent an ophthalmic examination by an experienced ophthalmologist. The diagnosis of CHD was confirmed by positive coronary angiography or angioplasty (an angiographic evidence of at least one 50% diameter stenosis in one or more coronary arteries). The diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease was confirmed by MR brain.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: thyroid disease, neoplasms, smoking, hypertension, and renal impairment (serum creatinine 120 umol/l).
