Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients were included who 1) had a diagnosis of hypertension according to the Guideline for the Prevention and Therapy of Hypertension in China (2010); 2) were at least 65 years of age; 3) had systolic blood pressure (SBP) >=140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) >=90 mmHg; 4) gave their informed consent, and 5) were willing to participate in this study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients were excluded who 1) had complications such as acute cerebral infarction and acute myocardial infarction, secondary hypertension, malignancies, stroke, diabetes or mental illnesses, or 2) were died, or withdrew from this study.
