Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: For an inclusion of the study, the patient whose isolate(s) is to be collected must: 1. Be age of 18 years or above at the time of informed consent; 2. Be admitted to the ICU more than 24 hours; 3. Meet at least one of following criteria during ICU stay: 1) has a recognized pathogen defined as a microorganism different from a common skin contaminant (i.e., diphtheroids, Bacillus species, Propionibacterium species, coagulase-negative staphylococci, or micrococci) cultured from 1 or more blood cultures AND organism cultured from blood is NOT related to an infection at another site; 2) has a common skin contaminant (e.g., diphtheroids, Bacillus species, Propionibacterium species, coagulase-negative staphylococci, or micrococci) cultured from two or more blood cultures drawn on separate occasions (including one drawn by venipuncture) AND the organism cultured from blood is NOT related to an infection at another site, including intravascular-access devices; 3) has a recognized pathogen defined as a microorganism different from a common skin contaminant (i.e., diphtheroids, Bacillus species, Propionibacterium species, coagulase-negative staphylococci, or micrococci) cultured from one or more blood cultures AND the organism cultured from blood is related to an infection with the same organism at another site; 4. Be willing to participate by giving informed consent.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The patient may not be eligible for the isolate collection if any one of the following is met: 1. Race other than Asian; 2. Diagnosed as BSI prior to ICU admission; 3. Negative cultures from peripheral blood set for clinically suspected catheter related sepsis; 4. Microbiologically documented BSI relapse within 28 days? of the last dose of designated antibiotic treatment; 5. Other potential reasons, in the investigators discretion, to confound or affect completion of study procedure.
