Intervention1: Carbohydrate drink: 400 mL of solution providing ~50g of carbohydrate
2-4 hours prior to surgery Control Intervention1: Clear fluid: 400 mL of clear warm fluid

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Adults planned for elective unilateral total knee arthroplasty. 2. Patients providing written informed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients with previous lower limb surgery, inflammatory arthritis, contraindications to regional anaesthesia, known gastroesophageal reflux disease or gastric emptying disorders, autonomic neuropathy, cognitive disorders MMSE less than 24, and HbA1c more than 8 percent within 2 months of surgery, BMI more than 35 2. Patients on insulin therapy 3. Patients unwilling for participation in the study or not giving consent for this study
