Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Children aged 4 7 years (both sexes) First dental visit, with no previous history of dental local anaesthesia Presenting with dental pain requiring definitive treatment under local anaesthesia Cooperative behaviour rated Positive or Definitely Positive on the Frankl Behaviour Rating Scale Able to comprehend and use the pictorial pain rating scales Parent / guardian providing written informed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Cognitive, developmental or neurological disorders affecting pain perception or communication Previous traumatic dental experience or chronic pain conditions Acute systemic illness or fever at the time of the visit Emergency dental situations where standard pain assessment could not be followed Visual impairment

MeasureTime frame
Mean pain scores recorded using the Animated Image-Based Pain Rating Scale and the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale, and comparison of the mean pain scores between these two self-report scales.Timepoint: Two time points within a single dental visit: (1) Pre-IANB (baseline) immediately before administration of the inferior alveolar nerve block; and (2) Post-IANB 5 minutes after the injection or upon objective confirmation of lip numbness, whichever occurs first. No longer-term follow-up applies, as both assessments are completed within the same appointment

Agreement/validation of the Animated Image-Based scale & the Wong-Baker FACES scale against the observer-rated FLACC scale, assessed using correlation coefficients.Timepoint: Two time points within a single dental visit: (1) Pre-IANB (baseline) immediately before administration of the inferior alveolar nerve block; & (2) Post-IANB 5 minutes after the injection or upon objective confirmation of lip numbness, whichever occurs first. No longer-term follow-up applies, as both assessments are completed within the same appointment
