Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: age 1 month to 18 years admission to picu within 24 hours of shock recognition parental consent and patient assent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: known primary adrenal insufficiency or chronic steroid therapy immunosuppresive conditions or medications terminal illness with expected survival less than 48 hours previous enrollment in interventional clinical trials inability to obtain informed consent
