Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Neurological and neurosurgical patients admitted to the ICU for more than 72 hours and requiring mechanical ventilation

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Refusal of consent 2. Pre-existing demyelinating polyneuropathy or neuromuscular disease 3. Diabetes Mellitus for more than 10 years or an admission HbA1c of more than 8% 4. High spinal cord injury and spinal cord tumours. 5. Nerve conduction study suggestive of peripheral neuropathy at baseline

MeasureTime frame
To determine the incidence of ICU-acquired weakness in neurological and neurosurgical ICU patients by nerve conduction studies in the upper and lower limbs.Timepoint: Day3, Day7, Day14

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To assess muscle strength with the Medical Research Council sum score (MRC-SS) and compare its changes with nerve conduction studies.Timepoint: Day3, Day7, Day14; To assess changes in skeletal muscle architecture (muscle layer thickness, cross-sectional area, echogenicity and presence of fasciculations) and diaphragm function (thickening fraction and excursion of the diaphragm) using ultrasound and to compare their changes with nerve conduction studiesTimepoint: Day3, Day7, Day14; To correlate multimodal findings and clinical outcomes: The clinical outcomes include length of ICU stay, duration of mechanical ventilation, duration of immobilisation, tracheostomy requirement, and functional status at discharge.Timepoint: At discharge from ICU
