Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: College students aged 18 30 years with BMI 18.5 22.9 kg per metre square by Asian-specific WHO category. Right-hand dominant students who primarily use the dominant hand for smartphone activities. Excessive smartphone use defined as more or equal to 3 hours per day and a score above the cut-off on the Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Version (SAS-SV). Reduced grip and pinch strength or early hand muscle fatigue of the dominant hand compared to age-matched normative values measured using a hand dynamometer.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: History of neurological or musculoskeletal disorders affecting the upper limb (for example, neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, recent fracture, or surgery). Contraindications to NMES, including pacemaker, epilepsy, metal implants, pregnancy, or open wounds at the electrode site. Skin hypersensitivity or allergy to electrode gel or adhesives. Participation in hand strengthening or therapy programs within the past six months. Severe smartphone-related hand pain (VAS more than 7 out of 10) or acute inflammation limiting participation.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Grip strength assessed using Jamar dynamometer. Pinch strength both tip and lateral assessed using pinch meter. EMG parameters by surface EMG amplitude. Timepoint: Baseline and After 6 weeks

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Quick DASH score, Smartphone Addiction Scale short version SAS-SV Muscle endurance and compliance. Timepoint: Baseline and After 6 Weeks
