Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Person having the capacity to consent to participate in research and provide written informed consent, ability to participate and complete different aspects of the study, Individuals with a Psychotic disorder (defined by DSM-5/ICD-11), including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and psychotic depression, with either new onset or relapse, Residence within accessible distance (say around 100km radius) from NIMHANS, Bengaluru

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Harmful or dependent substance use (other than caffeine and tobacco), Clinically significant comorbid psychiatric disorder, Clinically significant neurological, gastrointestinal, or immunological morbidity, or head injury, Currently or recently (2-4 weeks) on antibiotics/ probiotics/ prebiotics/ medications that alter the microbiomes/ metabolomics/ neurometaolites (other than psychotropics), History of infection/inflammatory condition in the past two weeks, Contraindications to MRI, Pregnant women and lactating mothers

To identify differences in heat-related changes in gut microbiota between individuals presenting with psychoses and healthy controlsTimepoint: One time point between patients and healthy volunteers

MeasureTime frame
To delineate the differences in the heat-related changes in gut microbiota leading to differences in microbial metabolites and inflammatory markers in blood between individuals with psychoses and healthy controlsTimepoint: one time point. Baseline comparison between patients and healthy volunteers;To evaluate whether the heat-related changes in gut microbiota leads to differences in excitatory (glutamate), inhibitory (gamma-aminobutyric acid, GABA), and antioxidant (glutathione, GSH), brain metabolites known to be associated with psychosesTimepoint: two time points in summer and in winter;To understand the experiences and perspectives of individuals with psychoses on the impact of heat on their day-to-day life, behavioural adaptations, and mental healthTimepoint: one time point. cross sectional and qualitative;To develop a predictive model for heat-associated psychosis by teasing apart the causal relationship between heat-related GMBA changes and psychoses, both during acute psychoses and in remission.Timepoint: One time point at the end of the study
