Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Age more than or equal to 18 years. Known case or a clinical diagnosis of COPD confirmed by treating team. Individuals who require Non-invasive mechanical ventilation(NIV). Admission to hospital primarily for acute exacerbation of COPD.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Primary diagnosis other than AECOPD causing respiratory failure. Known active hematological disorder or other condition that markedly alters blood counts. Discharged against advice. The individuals with COPD who are already on long term NIV /Home mechanical ventilation.

MeasureTime frame
Non invasive ventilation failure, defined as the requirement for endotracheal intubation and initiation of invasive mechanical ventilation during the same hospital admission.Timepoint: Before initiation of NIV After 1hour of initiation of NIV

MeasureTime frame
In hospital mortality, defined as death occurring during the index hospital stay.Timepoint: 4 weeks
