Inclusion criteria: 1. CBCT scans of patients belonging to the South Indian population. 2. Patients aged 18 years and above. 3. CBCT scans that include the posterior mandibular region with adequate field of view. 4. CBCT images with good diagnostic quality, free from motion artifacts and distortion. 5. Scans taken for routine diagnostic purposes (e.g., implant planning, orthodontic assessment, impacted teeth evaluation).
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. CBCT scans showing pathological lesions (cysts, tumors, fractures) involving the posterior mandible. 2. History of previous mandibular surgery, trauma, or reconstructive procedures in the retromolar region. 3. CBCT scans with poor image quality or artifacts obscuring the retromolar area. 4. Presence of developmental anomalies or syndromes affecting mandibular anatomy.
Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Determine the prevalence of the retromolar canal (RMC) in a South Indian population.Timepoint: Baseline | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| 1. To evaluate the morphometric characteristics of the retromolar canal, including: Length of the retromolar canal Diameter of the retromolar canal at its origin and terminal end Course and direction of the canal 2. To assess the anatomical relationship of the retromolar canal with surrounding structures such as: Mandibular canal Retromolar fossa Adjacent cortical plates 3. To determine the laterality and distribution of the retromolar canal (unilateral or bilateral occurrence). 4. To analyze the association of retromolar canal presence and dimensions with demographic variables such as age and sex.Timepoint: Baseline | — |
