Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: ASA grade I and II Singleton pregnancy Gestational age greater than or equal to 36 weeks Height greater than 140cm Valid informed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: History of hypersensitivity to amide-type local anaesthetics Contraindications to spinal anaesthesia Eclampsia Significant cardiac disease (NYHA Class III or IV) Severe anaemia (Hb less than 7 gm per dl) Morbid obesity (BMI greater than 40 kg per m )

MeasureTime frame
Sensory and Motor BlockadeTimepoint: Baseline (prior to spinal anaesthesia), immediately after completion of intrathecal injection, every 2 minutes for the first 10 minutes, every 5 minutes until attainment of maximum sensory and motor block and thereafter every 15 minutes until regression of sensory block to S1 dermatome and complete motor recovery (Modified Bromage score 0).

Hemodynamic changesTimepoint: Baseline (prior to spinal anaesthesia), every 2 minutes for the first 15 minutes after intrathecal injection & every 5 minutes thereafter until completion of surgery.;Post operative analgesiaTimepoint: At 15min, 30min & at 1,2,3,4,5,6 hours postoperatively
