Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Patients aged between 18 and 60 years. 2. Confirmed case of gastrointestinal perforation. 3. Willing to provide informed consent.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Pregnant patients. 2. Patients with any chronic conditions such as uncontrolled hypertension, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disorders, or hepatic impairment. 3. Patients with gastrointestinal perforation secondary to external trauma. 4. Cancer patients.

MeasureTime frame
To evaluate the association of baseline lactate level, arterial pH and duration of symptoms with 7-day mortality in patients presenting with gastrointestinal perforation in the emergency department.Timepoint: 1.5 years

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1. To identify which of these variables (lactate level, arterial pH and duration of symptoms) are independent predictors of mortality. 2. To determine threshold values of serum lactate, arterial pH and duration of symptoms that are significantly associated with 7-day mortality. 3. To formulate a simple risk stratification tool for early triage, resuscitation and prognostication in the Emergency Department. Timepoint: 1.5 years
