Eligibility
Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Patients scheduled for primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for a clinical and radiological diagnosis of primary osteoarthritis of the knee. Radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis. Able and willing to provide written informed consent for collection and histopathological analysis of resected tissue. Sufficient synovial/tissue expected to be available at surgery for histopathological analysis.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Revision TKA or previous major ipsilateral knee arthroplasty (i.e., not a primary TKA). Active local or systemic infection (e.g., cellulitis, septic arthritis, sepsis) at time of surgery. Recent intra-articular corticosteroid injection in the index knee within 3 months prior to surgery. Ongoing systemic corticosteroid therapy or disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) started for an inflammatory arthritis diagnosis within the last 6 months.
Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| To determine the proportion of osteoarthritis knee patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty who show histopathological features of inflammatory arthritis in resected synovial/tissue specimens.Timepoint: At the time of surgery and at histopathological examination of resected tissue | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| To characterize the specific histopathological patterns of inflammation (e.g., synovitis grade, lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate, pannus formation). (Timeframe: Postoperative histopathology reporting) To correlate histopathological findings with preoperative clinical features such as pain severity, deformity, ESR, CRP, & radiographic grade. To identify the prevalence of previously undiagnosed inflammatory arthritis among patients clinically labeled as primary osteoarthritis. To evaluate whether the presence of inflammatory pathology affects early postoperative symptoms or recovery parameters (optional only if you plan to record this).Timepoint: At the time of surgery & at histopathological examination of resected tissue | — |
