Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Inclusion Criteria Patients aged 18 to 70 years ASA Physical Status I or II or III Scheduled for elective abdominal surgery under general anesthesia with tracheal intubation and muscle relaxation. Patients consenting for participation in the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion Criteria Patients posted for emergency abdominal surgeries History of prior nasal trauma or nasal surgery. History or clinical evidence of deviated nasal septum. Known upper airway abnormalities or congenital nasal deformities. History of nasopharyngeal cancer or its treatment. History of esophageal disease including esophageal cancer, corrosive ingestion, or esophageal or nasopharyngeal surgery. History of epistaxis within the preceding three months. Ongoing or recent use within the last 10 days of antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy. Reported symptoms of nasal obstruction by the patient, including nasal congestion or congestion when lying down, difficulty breathing, noisy or loud breathing, stuffiness and increased nasal drainage. Visible anatomical obstruction of nasal cavity e.g. hypertrophied inferior turbinates, polyps, tumor, upon non-invasive nasal inspection.

Successful NGT Insertion on First Attempt - Defined as successful insertion of the nasogastric tube (NGT) into the esophagus on the first attempt, confirmed by Auscultation over the epigastrium during rapid insufflation of 20 mL of air via a 20 mL syringe through the NGT, and passive flow of 10 mL NS through the NGT, and aspiration of gastric contents through the NGT.Timepoint: Immediately after first attempt of NGT insertion.
