Eligibility
Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: The eligibility criteria for this study comprise adults aged 18 to 65 years, irrespective of sex, who have completed serum Vitamin D testing and bilirubin level assessments conducted by the Department of Biochemistry. Furthermore, to establish correlations with diabetic patients, participants must have undergone HbA1c level testing. To enhance the analysis, select participants with available hemoglobin reports will also be evaluated to correlate findings with hemoglobin levels.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Individuals with chronic liver disease (excluding non-alcoholic fatty liver), chronic kidney disease, malignancies, those who are pregnant or lactating, as well as participants currently taking vitamin D supplements or antioxidants will be excluded from the study due to their potential confounding effects on serum levels.
Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Serum Vitamin D levels (ng/mL): The main variable of interest, assessed to determine the presence of Vitamin D deficiency. Serum Total and Direct Bilirubin levels (mg/dL): Used to evaluate the presence and severity of hyperbilirubinemia. Serum Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels: Measured as a biomarker of oxidative stress to assess the antioxidant role of Vitamin D in bilirubin metabolism.Timepoint: Baseline | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Hemoglobin levels (g/dL): To evaluate the potential effect of Vitamin D deficiency on erythropoiesis. HbA1c levels (%): To assess the influence of glycemic control & diabetes on bilirubin & Vitamin D levels. Lipid profile parameters: Including total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, & triglycerides to examine metabolic associations of Vitamin D status. Liver function tests (LFTs): Including AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, & albumin to assess hepatic factors influencing bilirubin metabolism. Demographic variables: Age, gender, & body mass index (BMI) will be recorded to evaluate subgroup differences & potential confounding variables.Timepoint: Baseline | — |
