Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients in elective surgery in whom there is an indication for right internal jugular venous cannulation.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients who are morbid obese BMI more than 35 kg per sq mt in whom the anatomical landmarks are difficult to appreciate.Patients with previous neck surgery, neck deformity, thyroid swelling or neck scar will be excluded from the study.Pregnant women,patients with psychiatric problems,patients aged more than 65 years.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The first-attempt success rate for successful insertion of guidewire in both the groups will be the primary outcomeTimepoint: intraoperative period

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Number of punctures required with the wide-bore cannula for passing the guidewire. Number of unintentional carotid punctures in both the groups of patients. Number of patients in whom hematoma is seen at the puncture site. Number of patients in whom post-operative chest radiograph shows mispositioned triple lumen catheter.Timepoint: Postoperative 1 day.
