Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1. Patients fulfilling the criteria for Bipolar type 1 disorder, current episode manic with or without psychotic symptoms, as per ICD 11. 2. Current Young Mania Rating Scale score greater than 7. 3. Treatment naive patients or off treatment with mood stabilisers/antipsychotics since 2 months.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. History of any comorbid Psychiatric disorder. 2. History of any medical condition that would affect uric acid metabolism such as cerebrovascular disease, organic brain disease, inflammatory disease, chronic kidney disease, gout, disorders of lipid metabolism etc. 3. History of consumption of alcohol or any other psychoactive substance in the past one month(excluding nicotine and caffeine) 4. Violent or uncooperative patients. 5. On medication such as allopurinol which alter serum uric acid concentration. 6. History of use of long acting antipsychotics in the past 6 months. 7. History of electroconvulsive therapy administration in the past 3 months.

| The serum uric acid levels at baseline will be correlated with severity of the manic episode as assesed on Young Mania Rating Scale(YMRS).Timepoint: Baseline, 8 weeks;The changes in serum uric acid levels will be correlated in treatment responsders and non responders. Responders would classify as bipolar type 1 patients, currently in manic phase with YMRS scores after 8 weeks of treatment as less than 7.Timepoint: Baseline, 8 weeks | — |
