Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1. ASA II or III 2. Well controlled type 2 diabetic patients using oral hypoglycaemic agents or insulin. 3. Elective open abdominal surgery. 4. Duration of surgery 2 to 6 hours.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. Diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic neuropathy. 2. Hepatic and/or renal dysfunction. 3. Pancreatic cancer or islet cell tumours. 4. Patients receiving drugs with known effects on sympathetic response or hormonal secretion such as beta blockers
