Eligibility
Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery. Patients weighing more than 30 kgs.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Patients undergoing emergency cardiac surgery. Oesophageal bleed or varices. Oesophageal stricture. Patients who have had prior injury/surgical interventions of the oesophagus. Patients with cervical spine injury. Unwilling to participate in the study.
Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Comparison of first pass success rate for insertion of TOE probe between the two manoeuvres (passive head lift vs combined chin lift/jaw thrust) - which of the two manoeuvres mentioned in the study produces the highest incidence of first-pass success of the transoesophageal echocardiograph probeTimepoint: Primary outcome will be measured at baseline - at the time of insertion of the transoesophageal echocardiograph probe | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| To adopt the technique that allows for easier & increased first pass success rate of TOE probe into routine clinical practice. Number of attempts taken for successful insertion. Minimising injury to oral cavity mucosal structures. Minimising time taken for insertion. Minimising hemodynamic response to probe insertion.Timepoint: Number of attempts taken for successful insertion, time taken for insertion & hemodynamic response to probe insertion will be measured at baseline - at the time of insertion of the transoesophageal echocardiograph probe. Injury to oral cavity mucosal structures will be noted at the time of removal of the probe & at the end of the planned surgical procedure - duration at which this outcome will be measured will be dependent on the duration of the surgical procedure. | — |
