Health Condition 1: O- Medical and Surgical

Interventions

Intervention1: Dexmedetomidine: Loading dose 1mcg/kg for 10 minutes followed by continuous infusion till the end of the surgery @ 0.3 to 0.8 mcg/kg/hr.

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: •Patients posted for elective surgery under regional blocks. •Patients belonging to age between 18- 60 years of either gender. •Patients belonging to American Society of Anaesthesiologist’s physical status (ASA- PS) I and II patients.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1.Patients with known neuromuscular disorders. 2.Patients with diaphragmatic dysfunction. 3.Patients with chronic respiratory illness. 4.Pregnancy and lactation. 5.Patient on opioids, sedatives, or antihypertensives.

Primary

MeasureTime frame
1.To assess the effect of dexmedetomidine on diaphragm activity using ultrasonography by measuring DTF.Timepoint: From the start of intravenous dexmedetomidine on the day of surgery to 15 minutes after surgery

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1.To assess the sedation scores preoperatively & intra operatively using Observer Assessment of Alertness /sedation scale (OAA/S) 2.To assess for side effects if any. Timepoint: From the start of intravenous dexmedetomidine on the day of surgery to 15 minutes after surgery
