Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All patients with American Society of Anaesthesiology-Physical Status Grade I or II of either sex, aged between 1year and 14yrs, and undergoing elective surgeries under general anaesthesia, will be included in the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Refusal of parental consent 2. Patients undergoing emergency surgery 3. Patients with increased risk of aspiration eg. patients with full stomach, patients with trache-esophageal fistula, patients with impaired consciousness, patients with swallowing disorders. 4. History of prematurity, seizures, syndromic babies and congenital heart disease 5. History of recent upper respiratory tract infection

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1. to evaluate the actual preoperative fasting duration for solids in children posted for elective surgery under general anaesthesia 2. To evaluate the correlation between the actual fasting duration of the child and his/her blood glucose level at the time of induction of anaesthesia and 20minutes after initiation of surgery. 3. To evaluate the correlation between the actual fasting duration of the child and hypotension (as determined by fall in SBP) at the time of induction of anaesthesia. 4. To evaluate the proportion of children complying to the recommended fasting guidelines for liquids among the total children posted for surgery. 5. To evaluate the factors responsible for noncompliance to the recommended fasting guidelines. Timepoint: 24hours
