Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All CVC insertions performed in the anesthesiology and division of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine were eligible for inclusion. All operators were trained in basic ultrasound skills prior to the trial initiation. Patients in the age group 20 years to 75 years in whom the attending physician indicated CVC insertion.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: derranged coagulation profile Lack of valid informed written consent Infection at the injection site History of allergy to local anaesthetic Patient with previous ecg changes such as arrhythmia
