Eligibility
Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1)Adult patients (= 18 years) of either sex undergoing emergency laparotomy for major abdominal surgery, requiring general anesthesia. 2)Informed written consent.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1)Preoperative requirement of mechanical ventilation. 2)Preoperative room air oximetry SaO2 3)Patients requiring high doses of vasopressor support (Norepinephrine equivalent > 0.2 mcg/ kg /min). 4)ASA 5 patients, not expected to live beyond 24 hours.
