Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Consenting adult participants that have a confirmed diagnosis of type 2 diabetes based on standard diagnostic criteria such as fasting plasma glucose level (case samples). Healthy consenting adult participants (control samples).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Participants having an active infection or who are taking immunosuppressive or antimicrobial medication during the time of sample collection or in the week prior to sample collection. Participants who are pregnant or have other conditions such as autoimmune diseases, neutropenia, or cancer will also be excluded to minimize potential confounding factors.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Outcome measures for measurement of neutrophil mediated responses to polymicrobial biofilms include neutrophil count, oxidative stress markers (such as measurement of ROS activity of neutrophils), neutrophil function (chemotaxis and phagocytosis assay) and levels of NET generation.Timepoint: Immediately after sample processing

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Outcome measures for RNA sequencing experiments include gene expression analysisTimepoint: Immediately after RNA isolation
