Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Inclusion Criteria are clinician-diagnosed patients with alcohol dependence syndrome of any gender between the ages of 18 and 60.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion Criteria are Non-consenting patients, patients in delirium and patients who may be medically unstable for interview and examination.

MeasureTime frame
There are no clinical studies exploring the prevalence of skeletal muscle dysfunction in the Indian population. The reasons why the clinical correlates in the Indian subpopulation may be different are that the skeletal muscle mass and age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass are different in Indians from other ethnicities. There are actual ethnic differences in lean muscle mass, and South Asians reportedly have significantly less muscle mass than Aboriginal, Chinese and European populations of the same body size. Furthermore, the metabolism of alcohol and genetic vulnerability to adverse consequences of alcohol in the South Asian Subpopulation is reported to be distinct. One example is that our population has an increased risk of cirrhosis and cardiovascular events than reported in western literature. Hence, this cross-sectional explorative study aims to evaluate skeletal muscle dysfunction in patients with alcohol dependence in a tertiary care centre in South India.Timepoint: 2 months (8 weeks)

There is a need for interventional research for alcohol-related myopathy for this condition across settings. If the prevalence of alcohol-related myopathy is high, it can fuel further interventional research to reduce its long-term impairmentsTimepoint: 2 months (8 weeks)
