Intervention1: Ethyl chloride group: Application of 3 sprays of ethyl chloride on dorsum of non-dominant hand for 4-6 seconds at a distance of 5cm perpendicular to the surface of application. Control

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Paediatric patients of 8-17years age belonging to ASA-1 and ASA-2 of either gender undergoing elective surgical procedures requiring anaesthesia with no prior peripheral IV access.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Undergoing emergency surgery, syndromic children, decreased level of consciousness, intellectual disabilities, adverse allergic reactions to lidocaine or prilocaine, pre-existing sensory/motor deficits in the limb to be cannulated, burns, local infection, skin lesions, broken skin.

To determine the efficacy of ethyl chloride vapo-coolant spray in comparison to 10% lignocaine spray in facilitating analgesia for peripheral venous cannulations.Timepoint: Immediately after cannulation

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1. Assessment of time taken for venous cannulation. 2. Ease of application of cannulation. 3. Occurrence of adverse effects if any. Timepoint: from the time of cannulation to 30mins after cannulation
