Intervention1: Bowel preparation and probiotic: PEGLEC half packet in 1 L of water two times orally(8.00 AM and 2.00PM on preoperative day) Tab. Ciprofloxacin 500 mg oral twice and tab Metronidazole

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients undergoing spinal surgery- • Through posterior approach (Elective surgery) • Single level/double level dorsolumbar spine surgery

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Spine surgery through anterior approach/ lateral approach Neurological deficit with bladder/bowel incontinence Previous abdominal surgery Severe constipation (Wexner score > 15) Emergency surgery Any previous bowel disease like Inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis etc Allergy to polyethylene glycol/ antibiotics (in use) Patients with electrolyte imbalance Patients taking antibiotics with 2 weeks of planned surgery Diabetes mellitus, gastrointestinal dysfunction, or severe cerebrovascular diseases.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
To assess time to first flatus time to first bowel sound time to first defecation Timepoint: 3 hourly

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
severity of constipation, we would use Wexner Constipation Score. To assess stool quality, we will use Bristol Stool Chart Duration of surgery & blood loss will be recorded Timepoint: 3 hourly
