Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1)All patients of 18-40 years of age ,either of the gender, admitted for elective middle ear surgeries under general anaesthesia with one clear overnight inpatient stay preoperatively 2) ASA physical status I and II

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1)Patient refusal for the procedure. 2)Deviation from proposed fasting times or oral intake advice 3)Body mass index(BMI) greater than 30mg/m2 4)Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus 5)Hiatus hernia, intestinal diseases, previous upper abdominal surgeries 6)Patients taking H2 receptor blockers, proton pump inhibitors and prokinetic drugs or any other medication known to delay gastric emptying 7)Patients prone for aspiration

Primary

MeasureTime frame
1)To estimate gastric emptying at serial intervals in both the groupsTimepoint: Serial ultrasound guided gastric volume assessment after consumption of tender coconut water or clear water at 30 minutes interval till the basal gastric volume has been reached.

1) Effect on perioperative patient well being [thirst ,hunger, fatigue] 2)Comparison of perioperative blood glucose levels in both the groups 3)Comparing incidence & severity in PONV in both the groups 4)Assessing post operative complications like pulmonary aspiration, regurgitation 5)Length of PACU stayTimepoint: Serial ultrasound guided gastric volume assessment after consumption of tender coconut water or clear water at 30 minutes interval till the basal gastric volume has been reached.
