Assessing change in the smell and taste after surgery when patient use gargle with local anesthesia drug 2% lignocaine hydrochloride and nebulized with 4% lignocaine before the surgery during the neck spine surgery where tracheal tube will be placed by fiberoptic scope for anesthesia.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients of either sex with American Society Anaesthesiologists’ physical status I- II, age between 18 and 70 years, scheduled for fiberoptic intubation for cervical spine surgery under general anaesthesia

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients with recent airway infection, allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps, history of alcoholism, smoking, anticipated very difficult intubation, mental retardation, psychiatric illness, cognitive impairment, neurosurgical or oto-rhino-laryngeal surgery and, patients with the previous history of COVID infection with olfactory/ and gustatory deficits

Primary

MeasureTime frame
postoperative olfactory (using Indian Smell Identification Test) and gustatory dysfunction (to test five basic tastes ie, sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami or savory)Timepoint: The first test will be done the night before the surgery or on the morning before the scheduled surgery.Subsequent test will be done 3 h after the end of anaesthesia (time point T1) and postoperative day 2 i,e 24 hours after surgery (time point T2), day 3 (time point T3) and day 7 or at discharge, whichever will be earlier (time point T4). Patient will be contacted telephonically at 3 months after the surgery during follow-up for any complain of smell or taste dysfunction.
