Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All patients aged 18 to 65 years, undergoing open appendectomy for acute appendicitis from July 2022 to June 2024.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Perforated appendix on operation. 2. Presence of intra-abdominal abscess. 3. Localized or diffuse purulent fluid in the ab-dominal cavity. 4. Patients requiring Rutherford-Morrison incision 5. Pregnancy 6. Patients with chronic renal failure. 7. Patients with Diabetes mellitus. 8. Patients with known psychiatric or mental disorders. 9. Patients denying consent.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
1. To compare the pain score using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) on 1st postoperative day (24 hoours) following open appendectomy between patients having non-closure and closure of peritoneum while undergoing open appendectomy.Timepoint: 24 hours post surgery

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1. To compare the pain score using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) on 2nd postoperative day (48 hours). 2. To compare the requirement of analgesics in the postoperative period. 3. To compare the incidence of surgical site infections between the two groups. 4. To compare the incidence of wound dehiscence in 30 days between the two groups. Timepoint: 48 hours post surgery 30 days post surgery
