Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All patients of American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I and II criteria belonging to age group of 18-65 years undergoing laparoscopic surgeries under general anaesthesia.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Obesity(BMI >30 kg/m2), anticipated difficult airway, cardiopulmonary disease, renal or hepatic insufficiency, neurological or psychiatric disorders, hypertension (BP >140/90 mmHg), diabetes mellitus, allergy to dexmedetomidine, alcohol abuse, patients on anti-platelet drugs or steroids and pregnancy.

To study the effect of dexmedetomidine infusion on peri-operative stress response as measured by the levels of stress hormones (cortisol and Interleukin-6) at different points of time in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgeries.Timepoint: 1. Pre-operatively 2. Immediately after extubation 3. 24 hours after surgery

To determine the effect of dexmedetomidine infusion on hemodynamic parameters, post-operative sedation and pain, the need for rescue analgesics.Timepoint: Before induction, after induction, during intubation, immediately after intubation, at the start of CO2 insufflation, every 5 minutes for the first 20 minutes, thereafter every 10 minutes till the release of pneumoperitoneum, at extubation, 2 hours after surgery.
