Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: American Society of Anaesthesiologists Grade II and III posted for cardiac surgery necessitating midline sternotomy

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients with contraindication for regional anaesthesia 2. Allergy to local anaesthetic drugs 3. History of chronic pain 4. Inability to communicate effectively/psychiatric illness 5. Patients who had been intubated for more than 24hrs prior to surgery 6. Standard high risk patients based on Euroscore II

To evaluate the effect of preoperative transversus thoracis plane block on postoperative analgesia during rest, during cough and during spirometry using Numerical Rating System in adult undergoing cardiac surgery through midline sternotomyTimepoint: To evaluate the effect of preoperative transversus thoracis plane block on postoperative analgesia during rest, during cough and during spirometry using Numerical Rating System in adult undergoing cardiac surgery through midline sternotomy at 12hrs and 24hrs post surgery

1. Postoperative respiratory function 2. Total opioid consumption in the first 24 hrs after surgery 3. Number of rescue analgesia in the first 24 hrs after surgery 4. Duration of mechanical ventilationTimepoint: Respiratory function will be measured by ultrasound guided diaphragmatic excursion at 12 hrs and 24hrs after surgery along with ABG which will be taken at 6hrs, 12hrs and 24hrs after surgery
