Intervention1: Duloxetine: Duloxetine 30mg capsule given orally 24hrs before surgery and for 3 post-operative days for a total of 4 doses Control Intervention1: Placebo: Empty Duloxetine 30mg capsule

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1) Consenting patients >18 yrs of age 2) ASA I or II 3) Patients posted for orthopaedic surgeries like trauma, replacement, hip-replacement etc

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) Patients with known psychiatric illness or patients on antipsychotic medication 2) Allergy/intolerance to duloxetine 3) Patients on SSRIs, SNRIs, MAO inhibitors or recent use of MAO inhibitors ( 4) Hypertensives on medication 5) Patients on anticoagulant therapy 6) Narrow angle glaucoma

MeasureTime frame
Static VAS score (VASs) and dynamic VAS score (VASd) four hourly on post-operative day 0, 1 and 2Timepoint: At 4 hourly intervals for 72 post-operative hours

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1) Time for the first analgesic requirement. 2) Amount of rescue analgesic required 3) Number of doses of rescue analgesic required (tramadol and/or diclofenac) 4) Incidence of post-operative nausea and vomiting 5) Number of dressing pads changed due to soakageTimepoint: At 4 hourly internvals for 72 post-operative hours
