Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Cases: All cases of biopsy proven primary esophageal squamous carcinoma, arising from below the cricopharynx up to the gastroesophageal junction. Controls: (ratio of 3:1) a. Visitors of patients being treated at the hospital for other ailments, who have no symptoms of esophageal disease b. Patients visiting the hospital for minor ailments c. Healthy volunteers from the community

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: a. Patients/Controls who are unwilling to participate in the study. b. Patients with recurrent esophageal cancers. c. Patients with other histology like adenocarcinoma/neuroendocrine tumors/sarcoma/benign tumors of esophagus. d. Patients who are unable to provide personal history due to ill-health, language barrier, etc. e. Patients/Controls with history of prior injury/illness/surgery of the esophagus. f. Subjects who are less than 18 years of age.

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The Odds Ratio(OR) for developing esophageal cancer would be calculated for each of the risk factors, from which the adjusted OR would be calculated with stratification based on the other risk factors and other confounding factors.Timepoint: The duration of the study is 2 years
