To study how measurements of volumes inside the lungs at the end of expiration also known as end expiratory lung volumes , by using specialized techniques, may help in titrating pressures in the lungs during expiration also known as positive end expiratory pressures

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1.Invasively ventilated children weighing 8-kg or more until the age of 18-years.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: • Children on NIV • Children who are hemodynamically unstable for data collection. • Children who are already on High Frequency Oscillatory ventilation. • Children with significant Patient Ventilator Asynchrony • Children with open chest (following surgery) • Children with air leaks, with chest Drains • Children with raised Intra cranial pressure

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
To compare PEEP titrated by traditional bedside method with the PEEP titrated using End Expiratory Lung Volume (EELV) measurement made by Nitrogen wash out technique in pediatric ventilated patients Timepoint: 30 minutes, each mode

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To study how the end expiratory lung volumes measured at different positive end expiratory pressures can be used for measurement of lung compliances and transpulmonary pressures in different lung pathologies in children Timepoint: 30 mins, each mode
