Cervical dilatation of less than or equal to 4cm in first per vaginal examination. 6. Absence of significant co-morbidities such as antepartum or postpartum hemorrhage, uncontrolled diabetes, preeclampsia, eclampsia, severe anemia (Hb less than 7 g/dL). 7. Absence of significant medical or surgical morbidities.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Emergency caesarean section (those initially enrolled will be excluded). 2. Previous caesarean section. 3. Major congenital malformation either diagnosed before birth or after birth. 4. Severe adverse neonatal outcomes as defined by the following a. Intrapartum stillbirth. b. Need for neonatal cardiopulmonary resuscitation requiring PPV for 30 seconds or more or chest compressions. c. Neonatal death at less than 72 hours of age.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Rate of cervical dilatation expressed in terms of centimeter per hour and expressed as mean and standard deviation (or median and range and interquartile range) and its 95% confidence interval â?¢Rate of cervical dilatation before 4 to 6 centimetres dilatation. â?¢Rate of cervical dilatation after 4 to 6 centimetres dilatation. Timepoint: 1 year

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1. Rate of cervical dilatation in different subgroups (classified as per age, parity, prepregnancy body mass index, socioeconomic status) expressed in terms of cm per hour and expressed as mean and standard deviation (or median and range and interquartile range) and compared using t-test and expressed as mean difference and its 95% CI and p value. 2. Duration of different stages measured in terms of hours and minutes and expressed in mean, its standard deviations and 95% CI. 3. The subjective perception of the women, regarding satisfaction of oral intake during labor, and if oral intake would have improved labor experience would be measured using predefined and pretested proforma and described in quantitative and qualitative data as appropriate. Timepoint: 1 year
