Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: patients with liver disease who are expected to be invasively mechanically ventilated for more than 48 hours

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: chest trauma or chest tube at the ultrasound measurement site, prior history of neuromuscular disease

Primary

MeasureTime frame
to define the proportion of patients developing changes in muscle thickness( diaphragm and intercostal) and the magnitude of change in thickness among mechanically ventilated patients with liver diseaseTimepoint: at baseline,3rd, 5th, 7 th day of mechanical ventilation

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
to assess predictors of change in muscle thickness over time among mechanically ventilated patients with liver disease such as ventilator mode, duration of mechanical ventilation, length of ICU stay, medications including sedatives, analgesics, catecholamines, steroids, muscle relaxants. To assess need for reintubation/tracheostomy, use of high flow nasal cannula/ non invasive ventilation post extubationTimepoint: patients would be followed from day 1 of mechanical ventilation uptil , day 3, day 5 ,day 7 till discharge from ICU.
