Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients undergoing total thyroidectomy and hemi thyroidectomy for benign and malignant disorders in the deoartment of general surgery.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1.Patients requiring neck dissection in addition to thyroidectomy. 2. Patients with hyperthyroidism. 3. Patients with retrosternal extension. 4.Completion thyroidectomy 5. Large volume thyroid, >30 ml. 6.Patients on anti coagulation 7.Patients not willing to participate in the study.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
To measure the incidence of seroma, surgical site infection and haematoma following thyroidectomy with placement of negative suction drain and without placement of negative suction drain.Timepoint: 4hours after surgery,second post operative day,10 to 12 days, 1 month.

To compare the length of hospital stay in patients with drain and without drainTimepoint: 5 months
