Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All patients aged 18 year to 99 years who undergo thoracic surgery by median sternotomy incision

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Any patient having additional incisions for the surgery e.g. intercostal incision 2. Any patient having partial or total sternal excision. 3. Non consent

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Average verbal pain score by Numerical Rating Scale in the first 72 hours post operatively (or till patient on regular Acute Pain Service (APS) follow up, whichever is earlier) in various methods of postoperative pain management. Secondary end points 1.Daily worst pain scores and average pain scores till patient on regular APS follow up. 2.Number of days the patient needs management by the APS team in the immediate postoperative period. Timepoint: First 72 hours after surgery

a. To study factors influencing choice of performing or avoiding epidural catheterization. b. To study intraoperative pain management: methods and drugs c. To study side effects of perioperative pain management e.g. nausea /vomiting, itching, constipation, etc. d. To study significant postoperative cardiovascular, respiratory and renal complications, In hospital mortality. Timepoint: -Intra operative period -First 72 hours after surgery -Hospital Discharge
