Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients who come to medicine OPD at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Delhi between the age group 35-60 years and are diagnosed as hypertensive by the physician or who have previously been diagnosed as hypertensive by a physician and are on diuretics (thiazides or furosemide) for three or more months. And similarly age and sex matched controls, who are hypertensive but not on diuretics.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1.Patients with preexisting ear conditions/hearing impairment 2.Patients with history of any ear surgery 3.Patients on other known ototoxic drugs or have any history of ototoxic drug use namely: Aminogylcosides - amikacin,kanamycin,tobramycin Platinum compounds - cisplatin Alkaloids- vinblastine and vincristine Antiepileptics - valproic acid Glycopeptides - vancomycin 4.Patients with history of exposure to loud noises e.g. occupational exposure to loud noises.

MeasureTime frame
Prevalence of hearing loss in hypertensive patients on diuretics shall be assessed in comparison to the prevalence of hearing loss in hypertensive patients on drugs other than diuretics by Pure Tone Audiometry. Timepoint: Pure tone audiometry findings at Baseline to be compared

Difference in prevalence of hearing loss in patients on thiazide diuretics and furosemideTimepoint: Pure Tone Audiometry findings at baseline to be assessed
