Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All consecutive consenting patients aged more than 18 years who will be undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy with or without preoperative endoscopic biliary drainage for operable malignant tumors [Ampullary, periampullary, pancreatic and distal cholangiocarcinoma] causing distal biliary obstruction in the departments of surgery and surgical gastroenterology

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: a. Patients who had undergone percutaneous biliary drainage before pancreatoduodenectomy for operable malignant tumors [Ampullary, periampullary, pancreatic and distal cholangiocarcinoma] causing distal biliary obstruction b. Patients undergoing any additional procedure along with pancreatoduodenectomy, c. Patients who underwent preoperative endoscopic biliary drainage outside JIPMER

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
To compare the perioperative outcome (intraoperative and postoperative morbidity and mortality) between patients undergoing preoperative endoscopic biliary drainage and those undergoing upfront surgery without biliary drainage Timepoint: Intraoperative and upto 30th post operative day

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To determine the frequency and indications of preoperative endoscopic biliary drainage among patients with malignant distal biliary obstruction undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy To compare the biliary microflora between patients undergoing preoperative endoscopic biliary drainage and those undergoing upfront surgery without biliary drainage Timepoint: Preoperative and Intra operative
