Intervention1: Exercise group: Exercise group: Patients will be started on daily isometric arm, wrist and handgrip exercises from day 2 following surgery for AVF till 8 weeks post-operatively, as fol
put the palms of the hands together to contract the arm muscles for 5 seconds
rest for 30 seconds, and repeat the previous steps 5 times. b) Try to lift a heavy table with both hands to contract the arm muscles for 5 seconds. Rest for 30 seconds, and repeat the previous steps

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Age >18 years 2. CKD stage 4-5D undergoing upper limb AVF creation (radiocephalic, brachiocephalic or brachiobasilic fistula)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Inability to perform the physical exercise protocol due to physical or mental disability 2. Pre-existing failed AVF in the same limb 3. Patient with immediate vascular access failure (an access that has either no appearance of or a loss of bruit or thrill within 72 hours of creation) (as per North American Vascular Access Consortium (NAVAC) definition)

MeasureTime frame
a.AVF maturation at the end of 4 weeks. Maturation will be assessed both clinically and radiologically (using Doppler ultrasound) Clinical criteria for maturation: Easily palpable vein with a straight superficial segment of length more than 6cm, and good thrill. Ultrasound criteria for maturation: Vein diameter â?¥ 6mm, skin-vein distance â?¤6 mm AND estimated blood flow rate â?¥ 600 ml/min Timepoint: 4 weeks
