Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Inclusion criteria: For Cases: • Subjects detected with early stage chronic kidney disease defined by KDIGO guidelines. Stage G2 and G3a; eGFR ranging from 45 to 89 ml/min/1.73 m2. For Controls: • Healthy volunteers above the age of 20 years referred for routine general ultrasound. • Controls will be screened by taking history and going through medical records to meet inclusion criteria.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1.Athletes, body builders and physically active individuals. 2.History of upper limb surgery. 3.Hereditary neuromuscular disorders. 4.History of malignancy. 5.History of diabetes. 6.History of thyroid disorders 7.History of renal/hepatic/cardiovascular disease. 8.History of steroid intake. 9.Any other rheumatological diagnosis. 10.Osteoarticular injuries.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Mean and standard deviations will be calculated. Differences in dependent variables between men and women will determined using unpaired student t tests. Correlation between muscle thickness, echo intensity, strength and physical characteristics will be done using Pearsonâ??s correlation coefficients. Multiple linear regression analysis will be applied to assess independent associations. Statistical significance will be assessed by evaluating the p value. Timepoint: June 2021

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Normal pattern of muscle thickness, echo intensity and strength changes with respect to different age groups and BMI will be derived. Association of muscle thickness and echo intensity with muscle strength in various age groups will be derived. Changes in muscle thickness, echo intensity and muscle strength in early CKD patients as compared to the normal individuals will be known. Timepoint: August 2021
