Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All ASA 1 and ASA 2 grade risk patients, requiring lumbar epidural catheter for analgesia or anesthesia shall be included.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Immunocompromised patients 2. Diabetic patients 3. Patients with fever at the time of epidural placement. 4. Any skin lesion at the site of catheter fixation. 5. Emergency surgeries

Primary

MeasureTime frame
To compare the effect of tunnelling on bacterial colonization on epidural catheter tip versus conventional non tunnelling method of epidural catheter fixation. Timepoint: Bacterial colonisation shall be assessed at 24 hours and 48 hours of incubation after removal of catheter.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To determine the frequency of bacterial colonization on epidural catheters. Timepoint: After catheter removal.;To determine the nature of bacteria which grows at epidural catheter and skin site of catheter fixation. Timepoint: After removal of catheter.
