Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 144 adult patients with ASA I-III classification, age 18 or older, scheduled for cardiac surgery.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Subjects with severe COPD requiring home oxygen therapy, those with pre-existing diaphragmatic paralysis, pre-existing lung collapse, neuromuscular disease affecting proximal muscle groups and peripheral neuropathy, patients with skeletal deformities such as kyphoscoliosis and paralytic poliomyelitis and patients on prolonged mechanical ventilation.

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Presence or absence of lung tissue in the costophrenic recess after cardiac surgery.Timepoint: Presence or absence of lung tissue in the costophrenic recess after cardiac surgery preoperatively, post-operatively day 2 and day 5.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To assess the sensitivity and specificity of sonography as a better diagnostic procedure when compared to chest X-ray.Timepoint: To assess the sensitivity and specificity of sonography as a better diagnostic procedure when compared to chest X-ray preoperatively, and postoperatively on day 2 and day 5.
